Gigrin Farm Red kite feeding station.

uk/uk_wildlife/gigrin_kites_wx

Gigrin Farm is central to the Red kite success story in Wales. After years of persecution, Red kites had dissappeared from almost the whole of the UK apart from Mid-Wales by 1900. Even here, despite the efforts of some local farmers and landowners, the population dropped as low as 20 birds in the 1920's. Thankfully today the Red kites are one of the great success stories as hundreds of birds now thrive in Mid Wales and they have also provided the stock for relocating kites to the Chilterns, North East England, the Grampians and Ireland.

Wildlife highlights: Red kites in great profusion. Buzzards, crows and jackdaws also all come to feed on the meat that is provided.

Access  & facilities: There a 2 mile nature trail that winds through the farm, and there is plenty of other birds as well as butterflies and other wildlife.

There is also a picnic site, a red kite centre and a small shop that sells tea, ice creams and other snacks.

Admission to the farm: Adults £4.00, O.A.P £3.00, Children £1.50 (4 & under Free)

Open times: Open 364 days of the year - Closed on Christmas Day

Location:
Gigrin Farm is on the A470, 1/2 mile South of the town of Rhayader. It is signposted in and around the town.
