Gilfach Farm Nature Reserve
Gilfach Farm, a 410 acre hill farm nature reserve, is run by the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust. Situated in a beautiful setting at the confluence of the Marteg River with the River Wye in the mountains of Mid Wales, Gilfach Farm Nature Reserve has a wide variety of habitats, including; high moorland, enclosed meadow; oak woodland and rocky upland river.
Because of this variety the farm supports a tremendous abundance of birds and animals within a comparatively small area. This richness of wildlife has adapted to living in the various habitats created over the centuries through the practice of traditional farming.
Wildlife highlights:
- Birds: Buzzard, Dipper and Pied Flycatcher all breed here, amongst others. You may also see Curlew, Merlin, Red Kite, Goshawk, Sparrowhawk, Peregrine, Goosander, Kingfisher, Reed Bunting.
- Mammals: Otter, Polecat, Water vole' Stoat, Weasel, Badger, Fox, Hare, and Hedgehog.
- Insects: Damselflies such as the Beautiful and Banded Demoiselles and Common Red Damselfly can be seen. Common Green Grasshopper and Bloody-nosed Beetle are frequent found in the grasslands. Butterflies include Ringlet, Small Copper, Small Heath, Green Hairstreak, and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
Location: Gilfach Farm is seven miles from Llangurig and two miles from Rhayader off the A470. Follow the brown Nature Reserve signs. The Visitor Centre is one mile across the Reserve.
