Higham Ferrers Pits

uk/uk_2010/highah_ferrers_2

This small, 10 acre, reserve comprises a very narrow strip of grassland between the River Nene and the gravel pits of the adjoining SSSI. The reserve includes some of the Nene Way and adjoins a beautiful park called Riverside Park which offers opportunities for people to volunteer to help care for the park and learn about the wildlife. Also nearby are Wilson's Pits nature reserve and Stanwick Lakes.

Wildlife highlights: The pits attract large numbers of duck, especially in winter. The site is notable for the variety of dragonflies and damselflies which use the emergent vegetation on the edge of the gravel pits for feeding and egg laying. Brown hawkers, with their obvious large brown wings, can often be seen flying overhead, and black-tailed skimmers use the more open muddy areas along the edges of the pits to sun themselves.

Location: Adjacent to the A45. The best approach is to park in Wharf Road in Higham Ferrers and follow the path over the road bridge to the reserve. Parking at Riverside Park entrance is free.
