Hope Carr Nature Reserve
This 37 acre nature reserve near Leigh in Manchester is open to visitors can who can walk the trails and observe birds.
Until 1990, the site was a grassy desert alongside a wastewater treatment works. It has been transformed by United Utilities into a complex array of wetland habitats, wild flower meadows, and hedgerows. Lakes, ponds and wader ‘scrapes' have been dug, and banks raised to provide cover. 130 different species of birds now find a home in this semi-urban environment.
The Reserve is part of a larger network of important wetland habitats, running for approximately 9km along the Leigh branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. These include Hey Brook, Abram Flashes SSSI, Pennington Flash Country Park and Hope Carr Nature Reserve.
