Loch Stiapabhat Local Nature Reserve

Loch Stiapabhat, a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA), is a large, nutrient-rich loch in the north of Lewis. The loch lies on the main flyway for birds migrating to and from the Arctic and is important for a range of rare and interesting species.

Highlights: In summer corncrakes, dunlin and golden plover nest near the loch, and the rare spotted crake has been heard. The loch is also home to one of the largest colonies of black-headed gulls in the Outer Hebrides.

During the spring and autumn, the loch becomes an important stop-off point for migrating birds. These include pink-footed geese, whooper swan, teal and wigeon. Throughout the winter, buzzard, merlin and peregrine hunt over the loch.

Location: Lies a mile south of the A857 about 5 miles south of Port Ness on North Lewis.
