Lyme Park National Trust

On the edge of the Peak District, surrounded by moorland, Lyme Park is a magnificent estate and the largest house in the county. Its wild remoteness and powerful beauty contrast are set around one of Britain's greatest country mansions, now owned by the National Trust. A deer park of more than 550 hectares is a spectacular setting for seeing Red and Fallow deer.

Wildlife highlights: Red deer & Fallow deer abound in the deer park. There is a wealth of birds here, given the moorland, woodland and waterscape. Raven, buzzard, sparrowhawk, Tawny owl, blackcap, skylark, treecreeper, woodland birds and plenty of water birds and waders on the lakes.

Butterflies include Comma, Red Admiral, Painted lady, Tortoiseshells, Brimstone, Orange Tip, Green-veined White, Small Copper, Peacock, Speckled Wood.

Location and how to get there: The entrance to Lyme Park is on the A6, 6½ miles south east of Stockport (M60 exit 1), 12 miles north west of Buxton (house and car park 1 mile from entrance)
