Montrose Basin Wildlife Reserve.
Local wildlife news
Montrose Basin consists of 750 hectares of enclosed estuary on the South Esk. The daily tides bring in a rich mixture of nutrients which attract more than 50,000 migratory birds every year.
The wildlife centre has high-powered telescopes that provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, and 3 TV cameras give an excellent view as to what is happening out on the reserve.
Wildlife Highlights: Pink-footed geese all the way from from Iceland and Greenland, common eels that have swum across the Atlantic from the Sargasso Sea, knots migrating from Siberia to West Africa, salmon travelling thousands of miles from Arctic Canada and Greenland and sedge warblers that return to the Basin in late spring after spending winter in West Africa. Also Eider, Redshank, Shelduck, Oystercatchers, lapwings, curlew, godwits, dunlin and Peregrine falcons.
