Oaken Wood Butterfly Reserve

butterflies/haugh_wood_white_wx

Oaken Wood comprises of 9 hectares of mixed mature trees, coppice, scrub and grassland on clay soil; this reserve is a small haven in a large Forest Enterprise-managed woodland complex, which is mostly replanted with conifers.

Managed by Butterfly Conservation

Butterflies: Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Silver-washed Fritillary, Wood White, Purple Emperor, Brown Hairstreak, White Admiral.

Moths: Large Red-belted Clearwing, Yellow-legged Clearwing, Broad-bordered Bee Hawk-moth.

Location: From Chiddingfold on the A283 Godalming-Petworth road, find the minor road between Dunsfold and Plaistow. Car parking is unfortunately very limited - roadside at the entrance track to the forest - which must not be blocked or access for large forestry machinery impeded.

Grid Reference: SU 993 339
