Sandwich and Pegwell Bay nature reserve
Sandwich and Pegwell Bay reserve covers around 635 hectares and is actually divided into three sections, including the mouth of the River Stour. The reserve contains a mixture of habitats, including inter-tidal mudflats, saltmarsh, shingle, sand dunes, ancient dune pasture, chalk cliffs, wave cut platform and coastal scrubland.
The reserve is considered to be of international importance for its bird populations.
Wildlife Highlights: Waders and wildfowl are abundant in winter, and also during the spring and autumn migration season. Dunlin, curlew, oystercatcher and redshank are joined by large numbers of sanderling and grey plover. (Best seen on the mudflats of Pegwell Bay.) In summer merlin, redshank, shelduck, oystercatcher, ringed plovers and little terns can all be seen.
Seals: Boat trips are available from Ramsgate to look for seals in the River Stour.

Location & Access: Just south of Pegwell & Ramsgate on the A256. The reserve is accessed through Pegwell Bay Country Park.
