Pembrey Burrows and Saltings Local Nature Reserve

uk/UK_reserves/pembrey_burrows Pembrey Burrows is a large dune system which, unusually for present day Britain, is still actively being built up. It is renowned for its plant diversity and is home to many rarities including Dune Pansy, Dune Gentian, Sand Catchfly, Bloody Cranesbill, Fragrant Evening Primrose and Kidney Vetch. The ungrazed saltmarsh is home to the rare Rock Sea Lavender which fills the saltmarsh with purple flowers in August. Golden Samphire and Sea Aster also flower later in the summer with a blaze of yellow.

Wildlife highlights: Ringed plovers, skylarks, redwing, fieldfare, redshank.

The insect life that thrives on the plant diversity is also unique and you can find the Small Blue, small and dingy skipper, small heath, green hairstreak, common blue and Marbled White butterflies can all be seen. It is also a haven for great numbers of moths, including some unusual species; Grass eggar, cinnabar and yellow shell.

Many species of solitary bee and wasp such as the Brown-banded Carder Bee.

How to get there: Follow signs to Pembrey Country Park, but just before you get to the gate, turn left down a very minor road and follow this around the edge of Pembrey. You will see the reserve by the start of the Millenium Coastal path.
