Handa Island Nature Reserve

Magnificent cliffs rise vertically from the sea in the north west of the island. Every summer they buzz with the sound of around 200,000 seabirds that breed here. Guillemots, razorbills, and great skuas breed in internationally important numbers. Smaller numbers of kittiwakes and arctic skuas also breed here as well as a few puffins.

Highlights: April-July: Guillemots, puffins and razorbills breeding.
May-September: Great skuas, arctic skuas, fulmars and kittiwakes.
June-August: Wild flowers

Location: Situated off the far north west coast of Scotland this is not an easy reserve to get to, though well worth the effort. Small ferry boat operates from Tarbet. The service operates April - early September, Monday - Saturday from 9:30am. 2006 Ferry costs £10.00 (adults), £5.00 (children). Crossings are on demand and weather dependent.
