Rockcliffe & Rough Island bird sanctuary

Although an island, it is possible to walk to Rough Island at low tide via a causeway, though access is restricted in May & June due to breeding birds Rockcliffe is a beautiful coastal landscape in the sheltered Urr estuary. A network of small paths running through a mosaic of woodland, meadow and heather-topped granite outcrops, offer walkers fantastic views out to Rough Island and the Solway.

Rockcliffe offers a wide variety of habitats, woodland, meadows and merse (saltmarsh), which encourages a huge diversity of wildlife from birds, butterflies, and reptiles to marine mammals. The Rough Firth is an ideal place to birdwatch in winter.

Willdife highlights: Puffins, oystercatchers, terns, scaups, shelducks, light-bellied brent geese and mergansers. Northern Brown Argus

Location: 7 miles south of Dalbeattie. There are car parks in Rockcliffe and Kippford villages, all are a short walk away from the property. The Rockcliffe Beach car park is short-stay(20mins) during the summer. Parking is also available at the Baron's Craig Hotel, which is just above the Jubilee Path, which runs between Rockcliffe and Kippford.
