Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory
The Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory is on the Kent coastline on the floodplain of the river Stour. It is the base for the ongoing work of Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust, which has been recording all aspects of the wildlife of Sandwich Bay for over 50 years. The primary function of the Trust is that of an accredited Bird Observatory, monitoring migration and carrying out a scientific programme of bird ringing, in support of many national and international projects. They also have particular interests in the butterflies, dragonflies and unique flora of the area.
They have a programme of weekly events for members and non-members including walks, talks and workshops.
Wildlife Highlights: A huge variety of birds can be seen here, including waders, sea birds, warblers, ducks, geese, raptors, owls and more.
26 species of butterfly occur here, and there are records of several more unusual butterflies that appear very sporadically. A wide range of moths have been accorded here too.
Hares, stoat, weasel, most small British mammals, and even some marine mammals such as common and grey seals and even the odd dolphin and porpoise can be glimpsed offshore.
Opening times: The Field Centre is open from 10.00 - 16.00 every day (except Christmas), although occasionally they may close early if there are not enough volunteers.
