Taynish National Nature Reserve

Taynish National Nature Reserve, which occupies a stunning position on a scenic peninsula on the west shore of Loch Sween, is an example of how the Knapdale landscape would have looked in times gone by. The ancient woodland, which covers 330 hectares, is recognised as one of the finest examples of Atlantic oak woodland in Europe.

Facilities: There is a car park, picnic area, woodland path, coastal path and a short wheelchair path.

Highlights: Sea otters live in the reserve. Taynish NNR supports an incredibly rich diversity of wildlife with hundreds of species of mosses, lichens, insects, moths, dragonflies and beetles, flowering plants and butterflies, such as the internationally important marsh fritillary butterfly.

Location: Quite a long way from anywhere. Head south west along the B8025 to the village of Tayvallich.

Grid reference: NR728827
