Swell Wood, an ancient deciduous wood on the southern edge of the reserve, has one of the UK's largest heronries, which is best visited between March and June.
The Moorland Hide has had to be closed due to rotting structural supports, and due to access difficulties. However, equally good views of the moor can be obtained from the slightly elevated public footpath on the South Drove (as marked on the Trail Guide and map on the Information Board at the reserve).
