A mosaic of lowland meadow, fen, scrub, ponds, hedgerows and wet woodland bordering the River Lagan. The reserve supports a variety of bird species including mistle thrush, song thrush, grasshopper warbler, starling, linnet, bullfinch and reed bunting. Other birds include wintering water rail and jack snipe, resident jay and visiting kingfishers. Interesting plants include large bitter-cress, whorl grass, greater tussock sedge, early dog violet, gypsywort and wood club-rush. Other priority species are Real’s wood white butterfly and the pink meadow cap fungus. Dragonflies include banded demoiselle.
The reserve which is within Lagan Valley Regional Park has a network of paths and is open to the general public.
