Walborough & Purn Hill Nature Reserves

butterflies/Brown_Argus_wx

Walborough Nature Reserve has salt marsh and limestone grassland which are home to rare plants and insects.

Nature reserve walk: There is a circular walk between two nature reserves with marvellous views across the Axe and Severn Estuaries from Walborough, and across the Somerset Levels to the Blackdowns and Quantocks from Purn
Hill. The sea is once again being allowed to inundate the low-lying field behind the Victorian sea wall at Walborough, to expand the salt marsh. This is called `managed retreat'.

Wildlife highlights: Good numbers of wildfowl and waders can be seen on the estuary during autumn and winter, including redshank, dunlin, shelduck and black-tailed godwit. Birds wintering on the salt marsh include skylark, rock and meadow pipit, linnet and, occasionally, twite.

Butterflies include brown argus, grizzled and dingy skipper and grayling.

Location: Follow signs to Uphill village from the southern end of Weston-super-Mare. Head towards the beach but park near the large sluice gates on the left, or by Uphill Way in the lay-by. Walk past the boatyard either along the metalled track or along the sea wall to reach the reserve.
