Walker Riverside Park
Until the 1970s Walker Riverside Park was home to heavy industry, but it is now being nurtured with a greener future in mind by owners Newcastle City Council and a friends group. Just three miles from the city centre, it is a haven for wildlife, and provides spectacular views over the River Tyne.
Walker Riverside Park covers approximately 75 acres on the banks of the River Tyne, and consists mainly of wildflower meadows, woodlands and amenity grassland with some fine views of the Tyne.
Wildlife highlights: Garden warbler, Willow warbler, bullfinch, spotted flycatcher and willow tit.
Location: From Newcastle, the reserve is reached by bus numbers 12, 12A and 12B, which all stop along Walker road. Busses leave every 15 minutes from the Monument in Newcastle's city centre.
There are two car parks within the park, at the bottom of Belmont Street and at the bottom of Pottery Bank.
Pedestrian access is also available through Church Street and Malaya Drive, off Walker Road.
