Walthamstow Reservoirs

Walthamstow Reservoirs, owned and managed by Thames Water, are made up of 10 shallow basins with a few wooded islands. They are bordered by some grassland, scrub and also by Walthamstow Marsh. This site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (S.S.S.I) due to the birds that the Reservoirs support. 2 islands have been altered particularly for the birds by removing trees and scrub and by creating water scrapes. Access is by permit only, children under 8 and dogs are not allowed on the site.

This is the one of the largest Heron breeding sites in the UK and in 2006 Little egrets bred here for the first time, the first record of them breeding in London.

Highlights: All Year round; Tufted duck, Grey heron, Greylag goose, Great Crested grebe: Summer; Common tern, Breeding ducks: Winter; ducks and other waterfowl: Spring & Autumn; migrant waders, pipits, Yellow wagtails, wheatears.
