Weston Big Wood Nature Reserve
Weston Big Wood is one of the most wildlife-rich woodlands in the area. In springtime the ground is covered with wood anemones, violets and masses of bluebells. The traditional woodland craft of coppicing occurs in places along the central ride, but across the rest of the reserve all the fallen dead wood is left in place, enhancing the habitat for a variety of woodland species. This woodland is one of six nature reserves that Avon Wildlife Trust manages within the Gordano Valley.
Wildlife highlights: The wood is very good for birds, including woodpecker, nuthatch, treecreeper, buzzard, blackcap, chiffchaff, redwing, raven, goldcrest, long-tailed tit and tawny owl. Brimstone butterflies and hares are other notable species that may be seen here.
Location: From the B3124 turn onto Valley Road (signposted for Avon Police HQ). Just past the recycling centre there is parking in a layby on the left . The Valley Road entrance to the woods is opposite (Grid Ref ST 452 750).
Further entrances to the woods can be found off the B3124 at Black Rock Villas, at Underwood Road, and off The Downs.
