A number of different sites make up the reserve; Ferry Field is already familiar to most birdwatchers in the area; the hide close to the Visitor Centre looks out over the field – which is a good spot for breeding lapwing and redshank. The freshwater pool just in front of the hide always has something of interest; it can be a roosting place for hundreds of lapwing when the tide is high in the harbour and is a superb feeding place for waders and wildfowl.
Mill Pond Marsh lies just to the east of Sidlesham village, and consists of nine hectares of marshland associated with the old millpond, most of which is reedbed with a little scrub, perfect for typical reed-loving birds such as reed and sedge warblers and water rails. There is also a meadow that is home to hundreds of southern marsh orchids, as well as the spectacular wasp spider. Highlights. Huge variety of waders and wildfowl, and southern marsh orchid.
Acess. Most of the Reserve can be viewed from a number of vantage points, and there are footpaths around the harbour itself. The hide provides the best viewing. Some areas of the reserve are closed to the public.
Location. Pagham Harbour is located 6 miles south of Chichester and 2 miles north-east of Selsey. The Visitor Centre and main car park are 5 miles off the A27, on the B2145 Chichester to Selsey road near Sidlesham (note do not take the Pagham turning off A27).
