Pentwyn Farm Nature Reserve

This small 11ha reserve is all about unimproved hay meadows and hedgerows.

In Spring early purple orchids and cowslips are present and it is a good spot for migrant birds.

The floristic display continues into Summer, when a range of orchids (greater butterfly, green-winged, common spotted and common twayblade) are mixed into the colourful carpet of ox-eye daisy, hay rattle and eyebright amongst others.

The hedgerows provide good habitat for dormice, and in Autumn characteristic partially eaten hazelnuts betray their presence. The hedgerows also provide plentiful food supplies for overwintering flocks of birds such as fieldfares and redwings.

Highlights Orchids, butterflies and hedgerow birds such as redwings and fieldfare.

Location Take the B4293 from Monmouth towards Trelleck. Approximately 1 mile from Monmouth the road forks left for Penallt and Trelleck. Take a second left fork about 2 miles further on (signposted Penallt). Turn left at the crossroads in the village then right just before the war memorial (follow signs for Bush Inn). The reserve is adjacent to the Bush Inn. Parking is available by the Bush Inn or by the medieval barn. Please do not park on the village green. Wheelchair access is not recommended.
