Visiting the Mountain gorillas.

  • It should be noted that although the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is highly unstable, it is still possible to visit the gorillas in other countries.

  • The mountain gorillas, and the people who live near them, are highly dependent on tourism for their survival, and it is important that, assuming it is safe to do so, tourism thrives in the area.
A Ranger was killed and another was wounded in an attack yesterday near Kabaraza carried out by the Mai Mai rebels. The Rangers were on patrol and were ambushed by the Mai Mai rebels. The Mai Mai are Congolese rebels, originally started as a nationalist movement to counter the invasions from neighbouring states. They have now deteriorated however into yet another militia group, that among other things, seek the destruction of the park. They often forge relationships with illegal villagers within the park, and encourage them to poach.

Hippo slaughter
The Mai Mai were responsible for the hippo slaughter in Lake Edward, that left the lake red and virtually devoid of hippos. The meat of a hippo sells for some $300, and the teeth and tusks are also valuable.

Support the rangers with the most dangerous job in the world.
More than 100 rangers have lost their lives in the last 12 years. They rely totally on donations for their income and survival. Those families that have lost their main wage earners also rely on donations, so please help by donating whatever you can.
