Termit desert wildlife, Niger.

Good news from Niger. The project leader of the Sahara Conservation Fund, Thomas Rabeil, reports from the desert in the Termit/Tin Toumma area of Niger. Thomas and his colleagues are happy to report seeing nearly 60 addax in good condition in spite of daytime temperatures in excess of 45°C in the shade (of which unfortunately, there is virtually none!). They also saw a group of six Barbary sheep, a dama gazelle, several hundred dorcas gazelles and the tracks of at least one desert cheetah. Termit is a veritable Noah’s Ark and quite possibly the very last place on earth still harbouring such an important array of desert wildlife.

Thomas and his colleagues have also just finished a critically
important workshop in Termit with local Toubou leaders at which they expressed strong support for conservation of local wildlife,
especially the addax. This is a major step forward in securing the safety of the area’s unique wildlife.

None of this would happen without the support of the Sahara Conservation Fund.
