WWT Caerlaverock

The number of Barnacle Geese that fly from Norway to the banks of the Solway Firth each year are a sign of the quality of the wetlands at Caerlaverlock. This 1,400 acre wild nature reserve with hides and observation towers linked by a network or screened approaches and seasonal nature trails is simply a must visit for any lover of birds and their wild habitats.

A colony of Tadpole Shrimps, previously thought to be extinct in Scotland and the majority of Britain, was recently discovered by a researcher at Caerlaverlock.

Facilities include coffee shop, bookshop, sheltered picnic area and on-site self-catering farmhouse accommodation.

Open daily 10.00am-5.00pm except Christmas Day.

Admission prices 2006: Adult £4.40, Concession £3.60, Child £2.70, Family ticket £11.50. Group discounts available.

Rare White-tailed Plover at Caerlaverock

June 2007. Staff at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) were astounded when an extremely rare White-tailed Plover was spotted on the reserve at the Caerlaverock wetland centre.

This is the first ever recorded sighting of the species in Scotland and only the fourth time it has been seen in the UK. News of the sighting at Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire has spread fast as bird enthusiasts from all over the country have been flocking to the centre today to get a glimpse of this rare species.
